Elvis fans enjoyed a real treat last week when the King himself visited the island to star in ‘The Greatest Show that Never Was,’ with fellow legend Cliff Richard at the Four Views Monumental Lido Hotel.
The show, the brainchild of Sunshine and Star’s owner Mike Powell, was a standing room only event as both the King himself and Cliff created a non-stop tour of some of their defining tracks and decades. Elvis came alive from a star-struck teenager to his Army days, resplendent in full uniform, to the sequinned and be-jewelled, tight of hip, flared of leg, Vegas years. And Cliff was no shrinking violet either, as he shimmied and boogied on the floor in his signature tight leather trousers and jacket with the pulled-up sleeves. Both the moves and the hits were there from Livin’ Doll, Devil Woman and We Don’t Talk Anymore had everyone jigging in their seats.
The delighted and appreciative audiences clapped, waved and some even managed a quick kiss on Elvis’s cheek, as both he and Cliff ensured that the audience was involved as much as possible, from singing chorus’s, waving their arms and hoping to catch the King’s attention as he wound one of his innumerable scarves around the necks of his admirers – women only of course! The show finished with them performing a duet of ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’
On talking to Mike after the show, he said that after introducing Line Dancing to Madeira in 2002, he’s been planning a Rock ‘n’ Roll themed holiday for a while. After meeting Elvis (Peter King) and Cliff (Will Chandler) on tour he decided to invite them to Madeira to gauge audience reaction, which as you can imagine were intense. He is now planning the ‘Ultimate Rock ‘n’ Roll Madeira Holiday’ for January 2020, and for further details please contact Mike at www.SunshineAndStars.co.uk
